About Can States Protect Kids?

In 2013, seven months after Colorado and Washington legalized marijuana for recreational use, National Families in Action hosted a conference in Atlanta for regulators in those two states as well as legislators from other states that advocates targeted for recreational legalization.

In his keynote address at the conference, former President Jimmy Carter stressed that during his presidency he supported marijuana decriminalization but not legalization.

The conference had two goals: 1) encourage states that legalize marijuana to protect children from industry marketing and 2) encourage other states to seek marijuana policies that neither incarcerate low-level offenders nor establish a commercial marijuana industry.
